After keeping it a secret ever since the project was announced in January 2020, the makers of the Marathi film Chandramukhi (2022) finally revealed the name of the female lead at a grand event organized at the Royal Opera House, Mumbai, last evening.

Amruta Khanvilkar plays the title role. The makers made the announcement by unveiling a 35 foot cutout of her as Chandramukhi.

Khanvilkar, who performed a special lavni recital on the occasion to the song ‘Chandra’, sung by Shreya Ghoshal, spoke of how she found it difficult to not disclose her role in the media.

"It was quite a task for me to keep it a secret for over two years, especially in this time when we are all active on social media all the time," the actress said. "But I would like to give the credit to our director, Prasad Oak. Our cast and crew managed to keep it a secret for two years. And finally today we are revealing it."

Speaking of the film, Khanvilkar added, "This is definitely the most different and powerful role of my acting career. Chandra is a lavni artiste and she will bring to light the life and plight of lavni artistes. I am happy to have the opportunity to play such a role. We dedicate this film to these folk artistes."

The film is adapted from a book of the same name by Vishwas Patil. The author was also present at the event.

Addinath Kothare, who was seen recently in the Hindi film 83 (2021) as former India cricket star Dilip Vengsarkar, plays the male lead, Daulat Deshmane.

Produced by Planet Marathi and Golden Ratio Films, Chandramukhi is slated to be released on 29 April.
