In the upcoming Dasvi (2022), Abhishek Bachchan goes back to school to prove a point and earn some respect. The comedy, directed by Tushar Jalota, sees the actor as chief minister Ganga Ram Chaudhary who is remanded in judicial custody amid the investigation into a teacher recruitment scam.
The proud and arrogant Chaudhary immediately locks horns with IPS officer Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam) who looks down on him. Her constant taunts about his lack of education sting him and he vows to take the 10th board exams and pass or relinquish his chief ministership.
His wife, Bimla Devi aka Bimmo (Nimrat Kaur), occupies the CM's chair, a position that she begins to enjoy too much to let go of. A similar storyline of a wife stepping in as chief minister was previously explored in SonyLIV’s Maharani (2021).
As Chaudhary prepares himself for the exams, to the derision of Deswal, it becomes more than just a matter of pride. Bachchan, despite the occasional accent slip-up, looks confident in this new avatar, and it’s nice to see Nimrat Kaur back in Hindi films after Airlift (2016). Yami Gautam also looks apt as the no-nonsenses officer.
The Hindi film, punctuated with some funny dialogues, looks entertaining.
Based on a story by Ram Bajpai, Dasvi has been written by Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell. The film features music by Sachin-Jigar, and the score reminds us of the previous Maddock Films hit, Hindi Medium (2017).
Produced by Dinesh Vijan, Shobhna Yadav and Sandeep Leyzell, Dasvi is due to be premiered on Jio Cinema and Netflix on 7 April.
