In his last onscreen appearance, Rishi Kapoor seems to highlight the Kapoor legacy of living life to the fullest. The first song from Sharmaji Namkeen captures the late actor's love for food, and the joy and magic it brings to his character and others in the film.
Rishi Kapoor (1952–2020): Romantic hero who graduated into powerhouse performer
Sung by Jassi Jasbir, the lively Punjabi composition hits the right buttons and gets you interested. Right from the get-go, the tempo of the song is high, and there are no loud repetitive percussion or DJ beats. Music director Sneha Khanwalkar keeps the rhythms fairly syncopated and builds on the mood of the visuals.
With both Kapoor and Paresh Rawal playing the titular BG Sharma, a retiree whose talent for cooking takes him places, the visuals give the viewer the impression that they are witnessing a split personality. Despite his acting prowess, there is something about the chubby old man that seems to be missing in Paresh Rawal. Kapoor also looks like a man who knows his way around the kitchen, which makes his expressions more convincing.
Jassi gets the job done with style while Khanwalkar's composition is energetic and fun. Gopal Datt's lyrics are relatable, funny and delightfully colloquial.
Directed by Hitesh Bhatia, Sharmaji Namkeen will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 1 April.
