Sharmaji Namkeen trailer: Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal double up for this charming second innings tale

Hitesh Bhatia's directorial debut is possibly the first time India will see two actors playing the exact same character in one film.

The late Rishi Kapoor returns from the afterlife to showcase that typical 'Kapoor' charm in the trailer for Hitesh Bhatia's Sharmaji Namkeen. Also featuring Paresh Rawal in the same role, the film will be released directly on Amazon Prime Video on 1 April.

BG Sharma (Kapoor/Rawal) is a man struggling to find meaning in life after retirement. With both his sons busy with their own lives, he finds comfort in cooking.

The discovery of an accidental career, after cooking for a kitty party, sets the retired Sharmaji off on a journey of self-actualization. The film takes its title from the many savouries he excels in preparing.

The trailer is charming, sweet and filled with middle-class memes that make for a relatable experience. The only discrepancy is the switch between the scenes of Rawal and Kapoor. While it is known why the switch had to be made, it takes a little getting used to. Perhaps it will be a novel experience for the audience.

The positives are a promising ensemble cast with the late Rishi Kapoor looking perfect for the role. Sadly, he could not complete the project. Juhi Chawla, Satish Kaushik, Sheeba Chadha and Ayesha Raza Mishra provide able support. The film also has Suhail Nayyar and Isha Talwar in key roles.

Directed by Bhatia, Sharmaji Namkeen has been produced by Excel Entertainment in association with MacGuffin Pictures. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
