Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha has joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, which is led by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Announcing his decision on Twitter, Sinha wrote, “Happy to share that on an invite from our own, tigress of Bengal, tried, tested, successful honourable CM, Bengal Mamata Banerjee. I have joined TMC. Shall be contesting under the dynamic leadership of a great lady, great leader of the masses in true sense, Mamata Banerjee (sic).”

Sinha has been involved in politics for almost 25 years. When he first entered the field in 1998, he was part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He left the party and joined its rival, the Indian National Congress, in 2019 when he wasn’t given a ticket to contest the general elections that year.

The artiste served as the minister of health and family welfare in 2002 in former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet. He became the minister of shipping a year later. Sinha was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 2008.

The actor was last seen in Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se (2018) where he played a judge.
