Bachchhan Paandey song 'Heer Raanjhana': This Amaal Mallik composition is familiar yet pleasing

The latest song from Bachchhan Paandey (2022) shows the softer side of the titular anti-hero, letting us into his past and his romance with Jacqueline Fernandez’s character.

Set against the background of a colourful Rajasthani fair, Akshay Kumar and Fernandez's characters connect and fall in love. Composed by Amaal Mallik and written by Kumaar, the romantic duet 'Heer Raanjhana' has a pleasing melodious score that feels familiar.

That’s largely because it feels like we have heard something similar in the past from singers Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. Mallik joins the two singers on the track, but the song, while appealing, isn’t as memorable as the group’s previous collaborations. The lyrics by Kumaar also feel quite standard.

The visuals of the track lay out the fairytale romance between Bachchhan Pandey and Fernandez’s outsider that sours and eventually ends in her death.

Directed by Farhad Samji, the film also features Kriti Sanon, Arshad Warsi, Pankaj Tripathi and Sanjay Mishra. Bachchhan Paandey, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, is due to be released in theatres on 18 March.
