A 35-year-old still chasing a childhood dream might be the story of most people's lives. It is exactly why Jayprad Desai's Kaun Pravin Tambe? feels relatable. Featuring Shreyas Talpade as Tambe, the 41-year-old spinner who made his first-class debut with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League in 2014, the film is set to be released on Disney+ Hotstar on 1 April.
The trailer for the film is an uplifting montage of the struggles in Tambe's journey. On the wrong side of 30, Tambe is fighting time and a system unwilling to give him his one chance. From the sceptical journalist (Parambrata Chatterjee) to his tired wife (Anjali Patil), Tambe faces battles that are as much personal as they are professional. Yet, he perseveres. Juggling jobs that allow him time to play cricket, and with the help of a kind coach (Ashish Vidyarthi), he continues to play.
The trailer has been cut to build the emotional dramatic high that accompanies the real-life story of Tambe's cricketing career. It begins with a snippet of current India coach Rahul Dravid's speech in 2014, which marked Tambe out as an inspiration for younger cricketers.
Like the speech, the trailer which follows captures the unlikeliest story quite well. Talpade's naivete and enthusiasm feel appropriate for the character. Artistes like Vidyarthi, Chatterjee and Anjali Patil make for a capable supporting cast.
Directed by Jayprad Desai, the film has been produced by Bootroom Sports Production with Fox Star Studios in association with Friday FilmWorks.
