In his upcoming film Shrimati, director Arjunn Dutta shows that a homemaker’s life can be extraordinary.
Starring Swastika Mukherjee as the titular character and Soham Chakraborty as her husband, Shrimati is a story of a woman who finds meaning in leading life on her own terms, rising above societal judgement and validation.
The trailer begins with Shrimati ranting about putting up with unsolicited advice from everyone, including her maid (Kheya Chattopadhyay), her husband, his college friend (Barkha Bisht) and her sister-in-law (Trina Saha). However, the laid back Shrimati, who is dedicated to her domestic life, doesn’t bother until one evening when she experiences a severe anxiety attack at a party.
Motivated by her “well-wishers”, she starts working out, gets a makeover and begins to invest in self-grooming but her husband begins to feel ignored. The trailer shows that in her desperation to receive validation, Shri turns aloof and fails to meet a dying person. A letter from a friend makes her realize that in order to fit into a certain image, she has lost a part of herself and failed to realise that a homemaker can lead an extraordinary life too.
Mukherjee has evidently shed her usual demeanour to play a vulnerable and timid character, who is not as chic as the people around her.
The trailer reveals the entire storyline, leaving nothing for the viewers to anticipate. However, the visuals also hint that Shrimati's insecurities stem from her so-called "unfit" physical appearance.
The look of the film and the characters are strikingly similar to that of Dutta’s previous movie Guldasta (2020).
Shrimati is slated to be released in theatres on 8 July.
