Actor Suriya on Wednesday took to Twitter to accept the Academy’s invitation to join its Class of 2022. Following the international recognition of his recent films Soorarai Pottru (2020) and Jai Bhim (2021), Suriya became the first South Indian actor to receive such an invitation.
The actor said he would strive to make all proud.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the names of 397 artistes invited to the Class of 2022 on Tuesday.
Quoting the original tweet of The Academy, Suriya wrote: “Thank you The Academy for the invitation, which I humbly accept. My heartfelt thanks to all those who wished me, will always strive to make you all proud! (sic).”

A scene from Suriya's Tamil legal drama Jai Bhim was shared on the Oscars' YouTube channel under the section, ‘Scene at the Academy’.
Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan took to Twitter to congratulate Suriya, writing, “Glad my brother Suriya treads the ground of stars. In spite of gravity, which makes wings weak. We created angels and stars. Hence be proud brother to join the crowd of excellence (sic).”

Suriya recently made an important cameo in Kamal Haasan’s latest release Vikram. He played a character called Rolex.
The actor will soon make his entry into the Hindi film industry as a producer as his company 2D Entertainment will be producing the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar. It was recently revealed that the Suriya makes a cameo in the Hindi version.
