Shamshera trailer: Action-adventure starring Ranbir Kapoor in double role holds promise

Directed by Karan Malhotra, the film sees Sanjay Dutt play a sinister police officer loyal to the crown.

Ranbir Kapoor in a double role in Shamshera

Yash Raj Film’s ambitious period saga Shamshera has been long-awaited. Whether or not the film turns out to be worth the wait will be known only after it is released. But the trailer of the film starring Ranbir Kapoor holds the promise of being an entertaining action-adventure flick.

The trailer reveals that Shamshera takes place in 1871 in a region called Kaza. The famous and fearless dacoit Shamshera (Kapoor) and his roving band have the rich quivering in their boots.

Shamshera’s list of his victims also includes the British government. Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt), a police officer loyal to the crown, volunteers to stop Shamshera in his tracks despite knowing how difficult his mission will be.

Interestingly, it appears that Kapoor will be seen in a double role for the first time, playing Shamshera and his father.

From the first frame itself, it's evident that Shamshera is meant only for the big screen. The locations and landscapes are a treat for the eyes. The film also scores high in the production design and costume departments. The movie promises to be a fast-moving action entertainer with a high dose of humour.

Kapoor appears to be in good form, both when it comes to mouthing heroic lines and executing action sequences. There is a comedic undercurrent in Dutt's performance. It seems like Vaani Kapoor was cast only to increase the glamour quotient.

With Shamshera, Piyush Mishra returns as a dialogue writer in mainstream Hindi cinema. The last time he wrote actors’ lines in a big-budget movie was for Agneepath (2012), which was also directed by Malhotra.

Shamshera will be released in theatres in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on 22 July.
