Mainstream Hindi cinema’s fascination with sports biopics continues with Srijit Mukherji's Shabaash Mithu. The Taapsee Pannu-starrer is yet another film about an athlete who made it big at the international level against all odds, including gender bias.
Shabaash Mithu looks at the inspiring journey of one of India's most successful female cricketers, Mithali Raj (Pannu). Coming from a humble background, Mithali’s penchant for cricket is seen right from her childhood.
As a child, Mithali’s talent is spotted by a coach (Vijay Raaz) and she is allowed to train at the Women’s Cricket Board. After making it to the Indian team and becoming the captain, Mithali strives to ensure that the national women’s cricket team receives basic requirements and respect.
Pannu has got the batting technique of Mithali Raj right. It is evident that she has worked on it. Raaz appears promising despite a brief appearance. Brijendra Kala is once again reliable but is getting typecast as a member of a national sports body who isn’t happy with the team. He played the same character in Chak De! India (2007) and 83 (2021).
The trailer isn't as moving as one would expect. The biggest reason for this is that there have been quite a few Hindi movies on cricket and the lives of players in recent years, so there is a lack of novelty. The trailer also lacks the X factor, something that provides an overwhelming effect.
Produced by Viacom18 and Colosceum Media, Shabaash Mithu will be released in theatres on 15 July.
