The murder of singer and actor Sidhu Moosewala sent shockwaves through the state of Punjab. The young star was gunned down on 29 May while travelling in Punjab’s Mansa district, quite close to his home.
With a massive following, especially amongst the youth, Moosewala’s antim ardas (final prayers) witnessed his fans come together to pay their respects. He was cremated at his farm and the prayers were performed in the grain market in Mansa.
Moosewala had joined the Indian National Congress late last year ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab in February and the party has criticized the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for downgrading his security while his family has demanded an investigation into the killing.
Shortly after the murder, gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Satinder Singh alias Goldy Brar allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing.
Bishnoi, who was in prison in Delhi in connection with another case and has been named as the main conspirator in the Moosewala case, has been sent to the custody of the Punjab police for seven days.
According to news reports, he was brought to Punjab from Delhi amidst heavy security. The gangster was ferried in a convoy that had two bulletproof vehicles and was escorted by 50 armed personnel.
In another development in the case, the Punjab police have arrested a person known as Gora, a relative of Goldy Brar, and taken him to the Criminal Investigation Agency office at Mohali for interrogation. Gora was in Hoshiarpur jail in another case. So far, nine suspects have been arrested in connection with Moosewala's murder.
