Actor Rohit Kokate has played either negative or grey characters in projects such as Kaul: A Calling (2016), Date With Sai (2018) and Jaoon Kahan Bata Ae Dil (2019). So he is glad to have got a chance to do something different in Ajit Suryakant Wadikar’s Marathi movie Y.
“In this film, I am playing a mysterious character,” he told Cinestaan.com. “Initially, you won’t realize what type of a person he is. The film takes place over eight to 10 years. When the character is revealed in the end, only at that time the audience will realize who he actually is.”
Y is a medical thriller that revolves around a crime. The film stars Mukta Barve and pits her against powerful evil forces.
“As Wadikar himself is a doctor, there was a lot of clarity as to what and what not to show. This made it easy for me. Until the director got the desired shot, there used to be retakes. So as an actor, I got a lot of satisfaction,” he said. Kokate said that the film is based and shot in Marathwada, from where he hails. So that was the icing on the cake for him.
Kokate added that he never felt this was Wadikar’s maiden film. “I never felt as if he was very new or unaware about something,” he said. “He calmly keeps shooting a scene till he gets the right take. He has worked very hard on this film. Once an actor gets to know what he wants from the director, it becomes easy. He was very clear and convincing regarding the story and my character. This is rarely seen in Marathi cinema. I always like working with such directors.”
Working with Barve was another advantage for Kokate. “This is my first film with Mukta,” he said. “I was excited and happy to work with one of my favourite actresses. She is a very strong performer. It is a big deal for me to get to do a scene or a film with her.”
Kokate was seen in the recently-released web-series RaanBaazaar (2022). He also acted in the second season of the Netflix show She, which will be released on 17 June.
