At long last, the trailer of Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva (2022) has been released and it gives us a clearer look at what the film could be about. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the first film in the visual effects-heavy trilogy, which is inspired by Indian lore, sets up a grand battle between good and evil.

The film introduces us to Shiva (Kapoor), a young man who is the key to this battle between light and darkness. Set in present-day India, the trilogy launches the Astraverse. Bachchan plays a character who is part of a secret society called the Brahmānsh, whose members have protected the divine ‘Astras’ (weapons) that were created in ancient India for generations.

However, the lord of all the other Astras, named after the most powerful weapon of the gods, the Brahmāstra, seems to be waking up, upsetting the balance of the universe. In comes Shiva, who has to help restore balance, just as he is falling in love Isha (Bhatt). Shiva’s journey makes up the story of the first film.

Mouni Roy plays the antagonist, Junoon, who seeks to capture the powerful force for nefarious purposes, while Nagarjuna Akkineni also essays a character who is a key player in the battle.

The long-delayed film has some neat VFX and the concept of the ‘Astraverse’ thankfully, is original. However, there’s a lot of information to process in the nearly three-minute trailer.

Speaking about the trailer's launch, Mukerji stated, “Marking the beginning of a new cinematic universe, ‘The Astraverse’, I believe Brahmāstra is the kind of film that the country would feel really proud of. It touches on our roots; celebrates our rich culture and it takes us forward with our technology. The film is proudly Indian and imaginative and bringing together some of Pan-India’s most renowned names was a dream come true!”

Produced by Star Studios, Dharma Productions, Prime Focus and Starlight Pictures, the film is due to be released theatrically on 9 September in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
