Punjabi singer and actor Ranjit Bawa has released his latest song, 'Kinne Aye Kinne Gye 3'. With lyrics by Lovely Noor and music by M Vee, the song is the third in a series of hard-hitting songs that reflect on various issues plaguing the state of Punjab.
Beginning from 1947, the video traces the passing of time since India’s independence, stooping in June 1984, the time when the Indian army entered the Golden Temple. Through archival, sepia-tinted photographs, we see the army surrounding the Golden temple in Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. The photographs show the impact of the firing inside the temple as the song describes the valour of the young Sikh men who fought against the sacrilege of the shrine. From there, the song takes up a range of issues plaguing the land of Punjab today.
From the plight of the farmers, water scarcity to the use of drugs, the obsession with money, the manipulation and empty promises of politicians, as well as the erosion of Punjabi language and culture, the song goes through an entire range of problems, reflecting on what has taken place through the years. The archival photographs are interspersed with photographs of Bawa in performance.
What makes this song stand apart is the fact that it does not hesitate in describing the problems affecting the state and its people. In a scenario where most Punjabi songs and films are escapist in nature, Noor’s lyrics and Bawa’s voice reminds us about the real problems on the ground.
