Srijit Mukherji’s Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga revolves around a headman, Gangaram (Pankaj Tripathi), who is ready to sacrifice his life so that his villagers can benefit from a government scheme.
But when he enters the jungle to become prey for tigers, he encounters a poacher Jim (Neeraj Kabi) and his plan goes awry. The song ‘Moko Kahan’ sees Gangaram and Jim trying to track a wild cat.
As one would expect from Kabir, the lyrics are profound and moving. The meaning of the opening line, which translates to, “Why are you searching for me when I am near you?” can apply to plenty of situations. The song is apt here as both men are in the middle of their search.
Sufi singer Soumya Murshidabadi is not renowned in Hindi cinema. He has done complete justice to Kabir’s poetry with his deep, melodious and haunting voice. Shantanu Moitra’s music is simple and it complements the verses.
Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga, which is produced by T-Series and Reliance Entertainment, along with Match Cut Productions, will be released theatrically on 24 June.
