5 reasons why Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani remains in our hearts — Anniversary special

The sparkling chemistry of its lead pair, stunning visuals and writing are some of the Ayan Mukerji-helmed romantic comedy's strengths.

The 2013 coming-of-age romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) turned nine yesterday. While its lead pair, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, were responsible for the audience's initial anticipation, the film thrived at the box office due to word-of-mouth publicity. Here are some of the aspects of the film that set it apart and make it so endearing.

The narrative

The non-linear back-and-forth structure with Padukone’s character Naina narrating the story from her point of view makes the film relatable and instantly strikes a chord. The way the narrative progresses while highlighting some simple, heart-melting moments lends YJHD great rewatch value. Ayan Mukerji’s screenplay and Hussain Dalal’s dialogues work wonders.

The ensemble cast

While every cast member and character is memorable, it's the lead pair’s chemistry that is a major highlight.

Talking about of Kapoor and Padukone, Mukerji said, “Deepika holds her own against Ranbir. People fell in love with Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1994) because of Kajol, because of the way she falls in love with him. It’s the same with Ranbir. You love him because of Deepika.”

Apart from these two, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur and Evelyn Sharma's performances are still remembered. The biggest surprise was the legendary Farooq Shaikh and Tanvi Azmi who left a smile on our faces along with a tear.

Music album

Every song from the album composed by Pritam continues to permeate pop culture. Each track – be it 'Balam Pichkari', 'Ilaahi', 'Kabira' or 'Balam Pichkari' — has its own feel and continues to be played at functions.

Life lessons

The film’s dialogues such as ‘Life mein kitna bhi karo Bunny, kuch na kuch toh chhutt hi jaayega, toh jahan hai wahin ka mazaa lete hai na?’ and its portrayal of relationships are heart-melting. The film can be re-watched multiple times for its philosophy and life lessons which shine through its crisp yet straightforward dialogue.

Stunning visuals

The film is also a travel diary of sorts, allowing the viewer to vicariously visit the scenic mountains of Manali, picturesque Paris or the royal realms of Udaipur. V Manikandan's stunning cinematography and the fact that these places were integral characters in themselves are among the USPs of YJHD.
