On a podcast with Suchitra Pillai and Sudhi Sachdeva titled Hear it Here on B4U’s YouTube channel, Ranbir Kapoor recently opened up about the time his late father and iconic actor Rishi Kapoor used to criticize him for not doing enough ‘mainstream’ films.
The actor said that when he entered the industry, he had some baggage about being from an illustrious film family. “When I started off, I always heard the words 'family' and 'legacy', and I always looked at it as a responsibility,” he said. “Fortunately for me, I had the good sense that if I had to succeed in this industry, I had to do it on my own terms and I had to be individualistic about it.”
As Ranbir kept doing films of his choice, he had to face the music from his father. “So there was a lot of debate about the kind of films I was doing which came from my father, Rishi Kapoor. [He used to say], ‘What are you doing? If you want to be a mainstream actor, you cannot do films like Wake Up Sid (2009), Rockstar (2011) and Barfi! (2012) and films like that’. But it was very important for me to follow my heart and choose subjects that appealed to me, so I could put myself in those characters,” said Ranbir.
Ranbir shared the screen with not only his father but also his mother Neetu Kapoor, in Besharam (2013).
