Box office: Shamshera sees a major drop, period epic is yet another flop for Yash Raj Films

The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer's fall in numbers on its first Monday was more than expected.

Ranbir Kapoor in Shamshera

Shamshera, the long-awaited Ranbir Kapoor-starrer, had a disappointing first weekend, managing to collect only Rs31 crore nett. On its first Monday, the period epic performed much lower than expected, earning only Rs2.85 crore, according to the trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.

As our trade sources, Shamshera was made on a budget of around Rs150-160 crore. Right now, the film’s total collections are about Rs34 crore. Hence, the movie, which also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor, appears to be another major flop in the Hindi film industry this year.

Directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films, Shamshera is the fifth unsuccessful film in a row for the banner after Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021), Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021), Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) and Samrat Prithviraj (2022)

For Hindi cinema as a whole, there have been only three undisputed hits this year — the Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.

The following weeks will see the release of major projects such as Ek Villain Returns, Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan, Liger and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva. A lot is riding on these films for mainstream Hindi cinema.
