The much awaited Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Shamshera (2022), which marks his return to silver screen after four years, has taken a slow start. The big-budget period action drama only managed to rake in Rs10 crore nett on opening day, according to trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.

This is a disappointing opening, especially since the film was mounted on a grand scale and featured big names like Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt.

Directed by Karan Malhotra, the film has been released on over 4,350 screens, which makes it the biggest release during the pandemic for Hindi films. And despite this, the big-budget masala entertainer, rumoured to be made at a budget of over Rs100 crore, has underperformed on opening day.

Shamshera review: Exhausting period saga is overwrought and melodramatic

The film now needs a massive boost in collection over the rest of the weekend to do respectable numbers, but it seems highly unlikely now considering the negative reviews from the critics and audiences alike.

This is shaping out to be Yash Raj Film's third back-to-back disaster this year after Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) and Samrat Prithviraj (2022) which is a big worrying sign for the Hindi film industry.

The film features Kapoor in a double role as father and son, Shamshera and Balli, while Dutt plays the main antagonist Shudh Singh.
