Mi Punha Yein trailer: Show inspired by power struggle in Maharashtra is intriguing

Written and directed by Arvind Jagtap, the series will be streamed on Planet Marathi from 29 July.

Upendra Limaye and Sayaji Shinde in Mi Punha Yein

It has been barely a month since politician Eknath Shinde led a large number of rebel legislators from his erstwhile party, Shiv Sena, to a resort in order to bring about the downfall of the Maharashtra government, headed by party president Uddhav Thackeray.

Planet Marathi has already come up with a web-series, Mi Punha Yein, that recreates these events.

The titular phrase, which translates to I'll be back, was uttered by Maharashtra’s ex-chief minister Devendra Fadnavis while campaigning during the 2019 state assembly elections. The phrase has become synonymous with him ever since.

The trailer doesn’t flesh out the characters elaborately. We get to know that the show is about a power struggle between the characters played by Upendra Limaye and Bharat Ganeshpure. The former brings rebel legislators from his party and independent candidates to a resort in order to create a political earthquake in Maharashtra. Ganeshpure’s character is hell-bent on spoiling his plans. We heard him utter, “Mi punha yein” thrice in the teaser.

The character of Maharashtra’s governor, played by Rajendra Gupta, also seems to be inspired by a real person. The scene where the head of a party that has just one seat in the legislature visits the governor in order to form the government is hilarious and it instantly makes it clear on whom the characters are based.

The trailer features random scenes from the show, so it’s difficult to judge its quality and the performances. But anyone interested in Maharashtra politics will be intrigued.

Written and directed by Arvind Jagtap, Mi Punha Yein will be streamed on Planet Marathi from 29 July.
