There have been instances in the past when two or more films were released during the festive season. This Diwali, Ajay Devgn-starrer Thank God and Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu are scheduled to clash at the box office on 24 October.
But Anand Pandit, the producer of Thank God, is unfazed by this. “I don’t consider this as a clash,” he told Cinestaan.com. “In today’s times, the capacity of the Friday box office is almost Rs70 crore. In the past, when two big films were released at the same time, there have been instances where both did big business. The depth of our box office is good even when it’s not Diwali.”
Pandit, Devgn and Thank God director Indra Kumar had last collaborated in the successful comic caper Total Dhamaal (2019).
Pandit added, “With Diwali, the box office depth is 20 to 30% more. If both films are good, they will be successful at the box office. So I don’t think this is a clash. I feel if two good films are doing well in theatres, the audience’s attention will be on them instead of OTT. It’s like a food court where different cuisines are served, so there is something for each member of the family.”
Total Dhamaal was an out-and-out comedy. Asked about the subject of Thank God, Pandit said that he won’t be able to reveal the story but it’s interesting. “This is a slice-of-life type of a film,” he said. “It’s on the lines of Rajkumar Hirani’s movies where there is humour as well as a message. So it’s not a comedy film. It has a lot of humour but it also has a beautiful message. As soon as I heard the story, I told Indra ji let’s make this.”
