Singer Daler Mehndi, who is known for his Punjabi hit songs, has been sentenced to two years in jail in an immigration fraud case registered against him.

According to TheHindustanTimes.com, in 2003, a case was filed against the singer and his now-deceased brother Shamsher by Bakshish Singh who alleged that the brothers had taken Rs12 lakh from him to send him to Canada. Once the complaint was registered, the authorities received 35 more complaints of the same nature against the Mehndi brothers. Following these complaints, the offices of the brothers were raided and documents were seized.

In 2018, Daler Mehndi was convicted by a local court in Patiala and sentenced to two years in prison. However, the singer was granted bail. TheIndianExpress.com reported that the singer had challenged the order but the ruling had been upheld. Following that, he appealed that he should be released on probation for good conduct but the court dismissed Mehendi’s plea, according to advocate Gurpreet Singh Hundal, the counsel for the complainant.

Mehndi’s counsel was quoted as saying that they would be moving to file an appeal in a higher court. Meanwhile, the singer was reportedly taken into custody and sent to Patiala jail.
