Ammy Virk’s next Punjabi-language feature, the period drama Bajre Da Sitta, seems to have quite a unique storyline. Written and directed by Jass Grewal, the film follows the story of two young women who are ‘discovered’ as being singers.

A record label owner persuades them to sing commercially but this exposure leads to problems within the traditional, conservative community that they belong to.

The song ‘Sirnawa’ from the film, featuring lyrics by Jassi Pakhi and vocals by Ammy Virk, is a melodic, foot-tapping number that is picturised on the blossoming romance between Virk and Tania. Avvy Sra is the music director and the mix and master are by Jaydden.

Tania is seen walking in the lanes, accompanied by her sister [Noor Chahal] and friend. Virk, who is clearly smitten by her, follows her around everywhere, hoping to catch her attention. The song is set in a village and we see houses and unpaved streets and small shops that sell bric-a-brac, as the couple try to steal glances at each other. Tania looks every bit the innocent, young village girl, who is ignorant of the ways of the world.

Bajre Da Sitta song ‘Saari Raat’: Enchanting folk melody that lingers in the mind

The film’s songs that have been released so far all have a rustic, Punjabi folk feel, in keeping with the periodisation and theme of the film.

Bajre Da Sitta will be released in theatres on 15 July.
