Release of Raj Chakraborty's Dharmajuddha postponed again amid rising COVID cases

The release of Raj Chakraborty’s upcoming film Dharmajuddha has been postponed again due to the spike in COVID cases in Kolkata as well as the rest of West Bengal.

Chakraborty tweeted on Friday, “With a heavy heart, we are postponing the release of DHARMAJUDDHO again. Despite relentless efforts, some situations are beyond our control. Please hold on to your excitement. We promise to release the film theatrically for the impact and message it holds. Till then, stay safe (sic).”

Starring Ritwick Chakraborty, Subhasree Ganguly, Parno Mittra and Soham Chakraborty, Dharmajuddha depicts the fatal consequences of religious fundamentalism.

The drama was initially supposed to arrive in theatres on 20 March 2020. However, cinema halls were shut at the time due to the nationwide lockdown that was called in light of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The makers later announced that the film would be out on 21 January 2022.

To contain the recent surge in coronavirus cases in West Bengal, the state government has restricted occupancy in cinema halls to 50%. The 27th edition of the Kolkata  International Film Festival, which was supposed to be held from 7 to 14 January, has been postponed as well. Many figures from the Bengali film industry, including Srijit Mukherji, Dev Adhikari, Rukmini Maitra, Srijato Bandopadhyay and Parno Mittra has tested positive for the virus. However, all of them have had mild symptoms and have been recovering in home isolation.
