The trailer of Sayantan Ghosal’s upcoming film Swastik Sanket offers glimpses of a complex plot that links a bioweapon in present times to Adolf Hitler’s reign in Nazi Germany. The narrative also includes Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s mission to free India from the clutches of the British by forming an alliance with their enemies and a fictional plot about ethnic cleansing in modern Europe.
However, the trailer is overlong and it reveals so much that the story comes across as confusing and exhausting at the same time.
The trailer begins with Gaurav Chakrabarty's character Priyam narrating how Hitler ordered a scientist to create a bioweapon that would pose a threat to humanity in 1943. The formula of this biological agent was kept secret by a Bengali scientist (Rudranil Ghosh) for years.
Cut to the present time. cryptologist Rudrani (Nusrat Jahan), who is renowned for her book Sanket Rahasyo, is tasked with decoding cyphers on a device by Shataf Figar's character, and she succeeds. The masterminds behind the plan to carry out ethnic cleansing in Europe are then shown making use of the bioweapon.
Rudrani and her husband Priyam feel responsible for the turn of events and hence pledge to stop their adversaries at any cost. Amidst threats from their enemies, they encounter Ghosh's character and they learn a secret about Netaji's Azad Hind Fauj.
With Saswata Chatterjee portraying Netaji, it remains to be seen whether the director succeeds at blending the complex narrative's parallel threads.
Swastik Sanket is slated to be released in theatres on 21 January.
