The Delhi government, after a meeting with lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal, has announced that the weekend curfew in the state will be lifted.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) with representatives of the state government and lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal in attendance.

The decision brings to an end the month-long shutdown of theatres and malls in Delhi during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. On 28 December 2021, the state government had announced a lockdown of cinema halls and malls to contain the pandemic.

In addition, restaurants and bars have been allowed to function with 50% attendance. Government offices will have 50% of staff present from now on.

While the weekend curfew has been lifted, the restriction on movement between 10pm and 5am every day will continue for some more time. However, the odd-even rule for markets has also been rescinded.

The shutting of theatres in the national capital led to the release of a number of films being postponed. Chief among them were the Shahid Kapoor-led Jersey, the SS Rajamouli magnum opus RRR and the Akshay Kumar-led period epic Prithviraj.

The decision will come as a respite for theatre owners and exhibitors struggling without any major Hindi films arriving on the big screen in the month of January.
