Jhalagan Palagan trailer: An intriguing take on folk theatre


Directed by Arunava Mitra and Nilay Samiran Nandi, the costume drama is based on Bengal's poetic duelling tradition.

The trailer of the upcoming series Jhalagan Palagan presents glimpses of an entertaining costume drama that is based on Kobir Lorai, a traditional form of poetic duelling that is only witnessed in rural Bengal these days.

Starring Amit Saha, Sayan Ghosh, Biswabasu Biswas, Satakshi Nandy and Sreya Bhattacharyya, Jhalagan Palagan has been directed by Arunava Mitra and Nilay Samiran Nandi.

In the trailer, a saree-clad Saha greets the viewer. Assuming the role of a sutradhar (narrator in folk theatre), he makes references to modern forms of entertainment and states that there will be intense battle scenes, which will be fought with musical instruments instead of swords and shields.

What follows are a series of energetic dramatic performances, accompanied by stirring folk music. The performers can be seen in different avatars, including as fans in the jerseys of Sporting Club East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, the iconic rival football clubs of Bengal.

The basic concept of the series generates intrigue as for the first time a traditional performance art that is meant to be an open-air experience will be presented on a digital platform.

Jhalagan Palagan will be streamed on Uribaba from 9 January.
