Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit mourn Lata Mangeshkar's death

The veteran singer and national icon died this morning of COVID-19 complications in Mumbai.

A heartbroken film industry began to pay its tributes and mourn the passing of veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar, who died this morning in Mumbai of COVID-19 complications. The 92-year-old had been undergoing treatment at Breach Candy hospital since 11 January.

Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog, “She has left us... the voice of a million centuries has left us... her voice resounds now in the heavens!” The veteran actor made his way to the singer’s long-time residence Prabhu Kunj in South Mumbai to pay his respects to Mangeshkar and condole with the family.

Actress Shraddha Kapoor, actor Anupam Kher, filmmakers Ashutosh Gowariker and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar also went to her residence to pay their last respects.

Others from the industry, from veteran actor Dharmendra to Akshay Kumar, paid tribute to the legendary singer online.

Actresses from Hema Malini to Kajol, for whom Mangeshkar lent her melodious voice from the 1970s through the 1990s, mourned her loss.

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, whose grandfather Mukesh sang several classic duets with Mangeshkar, wrote that he and his family were devastated by her passing.

Ravi Shankar’s daughter Anoushka remembered Mangeshkar and her interactions with the late singer.

From those who had worked with her to those who had admired her, the industry tributes poured in.

It wasn’t limited to the Hindi film industry as artistes from across the country remembered the singer who was celebrated as the ‘Nightingale of India’.

Mangeshkar was scheduled to be cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park this evening.
