A competent good man pushed into villainy can often prove more dangerous than a hardened criminal. Karthik Subbaraj's Mahaan tracks the transformation of Vikram's character from a mild-mannered commerce teacher into a liquor baron, in an engaging, entertaining and highly stylized trailer.
The narrative begins with Vikram trying to eke out a living while carrying the burden of his father's dream to end alcoholism in Tamil Nadu. His financial struggles and feelings about failure push him into the world of gambling and alcohol, where he puts his knowledge of finance to use
Vikram's Mahaan, an intensely compelling and conflicted character, and his son, played by his actual offspring Dhruv Vikram, eventually go head to head. The son hates his father for having turned him into a gangster and seeks revenge.
Mahaan's story is reminiscent of the iconic American TV series Breaking Bad (2008-13), where a chemistry professor, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), turns into a vicious drug lord. The visuals are chaotic and typical of Karthik's style, with prominent red hues.
Featuring Simran and Bobby Simha, the cast looks impressive.
Mahaan will be released on Amazon Prime on 10 February in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. The film has been titled Maha Purusha in the latter language.
