Sarpatta Parambarai director Pa Ranjith to make Hindi debut with biopic Birsa

The biopic will trace the life of 19th century freedom fighter and tribal leader Birsa Munda from Jharkhand.

Noted Tamil filmmaker Pa Ranjith, known for films like Kaala (2018) and the sports drama Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), is set to foray into Hindi cinema with the action drama Birsa.

The biopic traces the life of 19th century freedom fighter and tribal leader Birsa Munda from modern-day Jharkhand who stood up to the British colonial oppressors.

Produced by Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishor Arora under Namah Pictures, the film will go on the floors by the end of 2022.

The action drama will be shot extensively at hitherto unseen locations and the makers plan to bring to the big screen verdant landscapes and deep jungles that have never been shown in a film before.

Talking about making his foray in Hindi cinema with such a unique project, director Pa Ranjith said, "I could not have chosen a better project for my first Hindi film. The process of scripting and research behind the film has been a very enriching process. I have gained inspiration from Birsa's life and his conviction for freedom and autonomy. Would also like to thank the producers for their patience during the process of research and scripting.”

Producer Shareen Mantri said, “We, at Namah Pictures, love to tell stories that engage, entertain and inspire. The team has undergone intense research for the film and we aim to bring alive Birsa's story on a colossal scale.”

Producer Kishor Arora added, “Birsa Munda’s story of revolution personifies courage in every way. We are thrilled to collaborate with Ranjith for his 'Bollywood' debut as a director and cannot wait for the film to go on the floors this year!”

Meanwhile, Ranjith has joined hands with Venkat Prabhu, M Rajesh and Chimbu Devan for the anthology film Victim.
