Toolsidas Junior trailer: A prodigy picks up the cue to redeem his father's legacy

Written and directed by Mridul, the sports film stars the late Rajiv Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Dalip Tahil.

Mridul's upcoming directorial debut, Toolsidas Junior, is centred on a young prodigy who takes up snooker in order to redeem his father's legacy.

The film, which was also written by the filmmaker, was the last film for actor Rajiv Kapoor, who died on 9 February 2021. Sanjay Dutt plays a key supporting role in the film.

The trailer is a compressed version of the entire film, where the late Rajiv Kapoor plays the father of the eponymous character. A snooker player of considerable talent, his only flaw is his inability to handle pressure in the finals.

Dalip Tahil's Jimmy Tandon is a snob who seems to get the better of Toolsidas every time. Seeking to honour his father, Toolsidas Junior (Varun Buddhadev) decides to take up the game professionally. With his father unwilling to teach him the ropes, he turns to a local gangster and snooker talent, Mohammed Salaam (Sanjay Dutt). The unconventional teacher takes the boy under his wing.

The trailer is predictable and full of common tropes but brings back memories of the late actor, who looks comfortable in his last screen appearance. Dutt is another familiar presence, but it seems it is Buddhadev who will carry the film.

Considering that there are very few Hindi films that deal with the sport of snooker, it will be interesting to see how the director approaches the subject.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions, Toolsidas Junior will be released in theatres on 4 March 2022.
