Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi will see Ajay Devgn return to a role he is comfortable playing. The actor will play a mafia boss named Rahim Lala in the Alia Bhatt-led feature. The character's attire, mannerisms and name seem inspired by the real-life Mumbai mob boss Karim Lala.
The makers on Saturday released a new teaser where Rahim Lala interacts with the titular character. The teaser features Bhatt's Gangubai approaching the respected don for help, which later leads to a bond between the two characters.

Devgn's performance harkens back to his role in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai (2010). Incidentally, the film saw the artiste play a character inspired by another mafia boss from the same era, Haji Mastan.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is set in the 1960s and 1970s when a meeting between Gangubai Kothewali, on whom Bhatt's character is based, and Karim Lala would have been possible.
The film has been produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions and Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios. Gangubai Kathiawadi will be released in theatres on 25 February 2022.
