Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran have started shooting for the Hindi remake of the acclaimed Malayalam film Drishyam 2 (2021) in Mumbai. A large portion of the film will also be shot in Goa in the coming months.
Drishyam (2015) — the Hindi remake of the first film in the Malayalam franchise, which was released in 2013 — was directed by Nishikant Kamat, who died on 17 August 2020. The sequel to the Hindi remake is being directed by Abhishek Pathak. The latter is known for producing some well-known films including Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), Drishyam (2015), Raid (2018) and Section 375 (2019).
Pathak helmed the National award-winning short film Boond (2019) and made his feature film directorial debut with Ujda Chaman (2019).
Speaking about the film, Devgn said in a statement, “Drishyam was loved and it’s a legend. I am now elated to present yet another interesting story with Drishyam 2. Vijay is a multidimensional character and he creates an engaging narrative onscreen. Abhishek Pathak has a fresh vision for this film. I’m keenly looking forward to part two, filling in the large shoes of the earlier film with people investing in the mystery and the characters."
Pathak added, “Making an official remake of a successful franchise film is an honour and a challenge. An opportunity to work along with Mr Ajay Devgn, who is such a powerhouse of talent, is a morale-booster for any creative person; his unique influence is undoubtedly the most enriching experience for me personally."
He also stated that It was exciting to retell a story from one's own perspective and vision. "The setting and the mood of the film uplifts the very essence of the crux, making it gripping from the very beginning," he said.
Bhushan Kumar of T-Series claims that Drishyam 2 will provide double the fun. “Ajay Devgn’s power-packed performance and prowess in Drishyam definitely captivated the audiences. Retaining the zest, we are delighted to begin filming its sequel that will take this franchise a notch higher as the audiences will witness double suspense, double mystery, double drama,” he said.
Drishyam tells the story of Vijay Salgaonkar and his family. Their life changes after his daughter Anju (Ishita Dutta) unintentionally kills a pervert. Vijay takes it upon himself to prevent Anju and the family from getting caught. The film also stars Tabu as a senior cop.
