Chiranjeevi remembers Bappi Lahiri with throwback pic: ‘He gave me numerous chartbusters’

Bappi Lahiri, who died last night in Mumbai, had delivered several chartbusters for Chiranjeevi's massy entertainers in the 1980s and 1990s.

Veteran actor Chiranjeevi remembered singer-composer Bappi Lahiri with a throwback picture and a post on Twitter today. He said Bappi Lahiri gave him several chartbusters which contributed immensely to the popularity of those films.

Bappi Lahiri died last night at Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital in Juhu. He was 69 and battling several health issues.

Sharing a throwback picture with Lahiri, Chiranjeevi wrote: "Deeply anguished at the demise of legendary music director and singer Bappi Lahiri. I had a great association with Bappi-da. He gave numerous chartbusters for me which contributed immensely for my films' popularity. He will always be remembered for his unique style and his great enthusiasm for life which reflected in his music. My heartfelt condolences to his near and dear.”

Bappi Lahiri became as popular in the Telugu film industry as he was at one point in Hindi. He forayed into the Hyderabad-based industry with the film Simhasanam (1986) and worked on as many as 25 films.

His association with Chiranjeevi began with the superhit State Rowdy (1989). He also worked on other Chiranjeevi-starrers like Gang Leader (1991), Rowdy Alludu (1991) and Big Boss (1995).

The composer's last rites are scheduled to be conducted tomorrow on his son Bappa's return from Los Angeles. Bappi Lahiri had been hospitalized for over a month and was discharged only earlier this week. Last night, he was admitted again in a critical state, just a day after his discharge. He was suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea and recurrent chest infection.

'It’s a deeply sad moment for us. Our beloved Bappi-da left for the heavenly abode last midnight. The cremation will take place on the arrival of Bappa from LA tomorrow mid-morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul,' read a statement from the family.
