After releasing a rousing introduction to Gangubai (Alia Bhatt) titled ‘Dholida’, the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) have released a second song 'Jab Saiyaan', which reveals the softer side of the young brothel madam.

Composed by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and written by AM Turaz, it introduces actor Shantanu Maheshwari's character who appears to be infatuated with Gangubai.

Sparks fly between the character, who seems to be a tailor, and the madam, with the latter gaining the upper hand in their interactions. The song ends with Maheshwari’s character taking her out for a ride in a carriage as a besotted suitor.

We instantly wonder whether this pair and their blooming romance will have a happy ending after all.

Singer Shreya Ghoshal delivers a heartfelt rendition that elevates Turaz’s lyrics of longing and hope. Ghoshal, who debuted in Bhansali’s Devdas (2002), rarely gets solos where her sweet voice is the centre of attention, so it’s wonderful to see her come full circle here.

Bhansali’s composition is muted overall, as compared to the previous song. Its use of the harmonium and rhythm section, at certain portions, reminds one of the older Hindi film mujras, which we rarely hear any more as well.

Produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios, the film has been written by the filmmaker and Utkarshini Vashishtha. Ajay Devgn also stars in a special role.

Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is being premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival with Bhatt in attendance, will be released theatrically on 25 February.
