One can expect the soundtrack of Nagraj Manjule's Jhund to be as earthy, rustic and robust as the people the film portrays.
Ajay-Atul's composition 'Aaya Ye Jhund Hai', which features vocals by Atul Gogavale, is an ode to the never-say-die spirit, struggles and angst of a lost generation.
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jhund is based on the life and work of Vijay Barse, the founder of the NGO Slum Soccer.
The track is thumping and reverberates with energy — a trademark of Ajay-Atul's compositions. The Sairat (2016) composers capture the drive of the youth to fight the system. The song opens with a chaotic sound mix which is overlayed with Atul's wonderful vocals before it slips into a hypnotic rhythm that sets the tone for the anthem, which is addictive.
The lyrics by Ajay-Atul are a fantastic mix of similes in colloquial Hindi that suit the larger theme of the song. Its evocation of repressed anger, a fight against oppression and biases are wonderfully expressed.
Manjule's visuals depict a group from different parts of the slums in Nagpur coming together to make a stand. The filmmaker has had a close partnership with the composers since his first film, and the song is a remarkable example of their collaborative relationship. The visuals and the composition move with equal ferocity to keep you captivated.
Jhund is set to be released in theatres on 4 March 2022.
