Coronavirus update: Veteran actor Bhishma Guhathakurta dies of COVID-19 complications at 73


The artiste appeared in his maternal uncle Satyajit Ray's Ganashatru (1990) and Shakha Proshakha (1991).

Actor and Rabindra Sangeet singer Bhishma Guhathakurta died today of COVID-19-related complications. He was 73.

According to a report in Anandabazar Patrika, a Bengali daily, the actor had been admitted to a hospital in South Kolkata after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Guhathakurta, a cricket player in his early days, got his first break in Tapan Sinha’s film Raja (1974). A favourite of the director, Guhathakurta then appeared in the filmmaker’s Harmonium (1975), Bancharamer Bagan (1980), Adalat O Ekti Meye (1981), Baidurya Rahasya (1985), Atanka (1985) and Antardhan (1992).

Guhathurta also worked with the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, his maternal uncle, in films Ganashatru (1990) and Shakha Proshakha (1991). Sandip Ray also worked with the actor in Phatikchand (1983) and Goopy Bagha Phere Elo (1991).

Skilled at playing the piano and painting, Guhathakurta got married to television anchor and actress Saswati Guhathakurta but they separated later.
