Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Shamshera to be released in theatres on 22 July

Yash Raj Films’ keenly-awaited Shamshera was supposed to arrive in theatres on 18 March this year. But the film's release has been postponed to 22 July. A lot of Hindi films were postponed following the shutdown of theatres in Delhi in December last year due to rising COVID-19 cases. 

The makers of the film, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor, shared the news via a video. The clip shows the three actors speaking about the protagonist Shamshera, played by Kapoor, who is a dacoit but also someone who believes in being azad [free]. The film has been directed by Karan Malhotra. 

Kapoor, Dutt and Vaani are seen wearing casuals in this video but that won’t be the case in the film because it is set in the 19th century. 

Kapoor had told the news agency Press Trust of India [PTI] a few months ago that Shamshera is not the story of a bandit but a film based in the 1800s. "It is about a dacoit tribe who are fighting for their rights and independence from the British. There was a great story of heroism, a story rooted in our country which happened back then," he said.

Prithviraj, another period film that is being backed by the Yash Raj Films' banner, will be released on 10 June.
