The Marathi biopic, Me Vasantrao (2022), based on the life of Hindustani classical vocalist Vasantrao Deshpande, is finally being released in theatres on 1 April on the auspicious holiday of Gudi Padwa.

Directed by Nipun Dharmadhikari, the feature was originally due to be released on 1 May 2020 but had to be postponed because of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deshpande’s grandson, Rahul, who is also a classical vocalist, plays his legendary grandfather in the film.

Rahul shared news of the release and stated, “I always know what to say but today I am lost for words. The project we worked on for the last eight years has finally come to its completion.”

He added, “I want each and every one of you to go to the theatres and celebrate the true legend and enjoy the great musical maifil that was Vasantrao Deshpande!”

Me Vasantrao was screened at the 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year, where it received favourable response.

Co-produced by Viacom18 Studios and Jio Studios, the musical also features Anita Date, Pushkaraj Chirputkar, Kaumudi Walokar and Amey Wagh. This is Jio Studios' first Marathi production.

Correction, 2 February 2022: An earlier version of the report spelt the film's title as Mee Vasantrao. The title has been modified to Me Vasantrao.
