Box office - Ek Villain Returns has a low first week, Thor: Love And Thunder closes in on Rs100 crore

The first film in the franchise, Ek Villain (2014), had become a major success at the ticket window.

After a decent first weekend of around Rs22 crore nett, it seemed as if Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain Returns (2022) will perform averagely in its first week. But that hasn’t been the case, as the film has had a low journey in the weekdays that followed.

The John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Tara Sutaria and Disha Patani-starrer took a dip on Monday as it made Rs2.85 crore, as per figures shared by the trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com. From here on, it has seen a downward trend and reached Rs1.75 crore on Thursday, 4 August.

As per our trade sources, Ek Villain Returns is made at a budget around Rs50-60 crore. With its grand total only being Rs31.10 crore right now, it seems the film will struggle to reach its cost of production, despite no big Hindi film releasing in theatres today.

Ek Villain Returns is the sequel to Suri’s own Ek Villain (2014), which starred Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor. That movie had been a major success at the box office. It almost reached Rs100 crore against a budget of just around Rs40 crore.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood movie Thor: Love And Thunder has finished its fourth week in India at Rs99.35 crore. The Marvel superhero film did go through a steep fall after the first week where it scored almost Rs80 crore. But earning Rs100 crore at a time when Hindi films are flopping left right and centre is an achievement.
