The timeless song by Rabindranath Tagore ‘Purano Shei Diner Katha’ is a popular, well-known melody. The song will be a part of the film Lakadbaggha, starring Anshuman Jha and Ridhi Dogra.
As part of his initial days of struggle in theatre, actor Anshuman Jha was exposed to literature and classical folk music. As someone who is involved with all aspects of the films he works on, especially music, he is now trying to bring back classical elements in the contemporary stories backed by him.
In the LGBTQ+ film Hum Bhi Akele, Tum Bhi Akele (2021) starring Jha and Zareen Khan in the lead roles, he included Bulleh Shah's evergreen song 'Bulla Ki Jaana'. Now, Jha is using Tagore’s classic song 'Purano Shei Diner Katha' in his upcoming action-thriller Lakadbaggha.
The vocals of the new rendition are by Shuchi Pathak and Belgian maestro Simon Fransquet has recomposed the song. Interestingly, the original song has its roots in Scotland, as it was inspired by the Scottish poet Robert Burns and his poem.
Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele review: Sincere storyline marred by poor execution
Speaking about the song, Jha said, "It's a conscious effort to include the works of these masters into the stories we weave today. I feel it's our responsibility as artists. Tagore is a hero figure for me. And Purano is an absolute favourite and we have got my favourite female voice in Shruti Pathak to sing it. It's her first Bengali song."
Lakadbaggha is an animal-centric film about dogs in Kolkata. The film also stars Milind Soman and Paresh Pahuja.
