A game of cat and mouse seems to be unveiled in the teaser of Monica O My Darling (2022) released by Netflix. Vasan Bala’s thriller, starring Rajkummar Rao, Radhika Apte, and Huma Qureshi, features an intriguing teaser that sets the stage for the drama to unfold.
The teaser begins with Jayant (Rajkummar Rao) narrating how he belongs to a small place called Angola. The earnest scene with Rao is juxtaposed with one featuring Huma Qureshi, where she offers him tea. Seductive, sultry and with the poise of a cat, she refuses to take no for an answer, telling him that it’s just tea, not poison.
Meanwhile, Radhika Apte’s character tells a relatively bewildered Rao to not narrate his backstory so perfectly. Meanwhile, Sikandar Kher deridingly addresses him as ‘Prince of Angola’. Adding to the drama is a scene where Qureshi is seen chopping up a tiger mantlepiece statue.
The teaser piques one’s interest in the events to unfold. Laced with humour, there is a certain light-heartedness in the glimpses of the deft performances. With the look and feel of a noir film, the music harks back to suspense thrillers seen in Hindi cinema from the 1970s. The colour grading of the film has a sepia-tint as well, creating a certain old-world texture to the teaser.
Produced by Sanjay Routray and Sarita Patil under the banner Matchbox Shots, the release date of the film is yet to be announced. The thriller also stars Bagavathi Perumal, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Sukant Goel and Zayn Marie Khan.
