Before the pandemic, Hindi films used to release on over-the-top (OTT) platforms eight weeks after their theatrical release. But during pandemic, the window was reduced to four weeks.
But Aamir Khan has ensured that his upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), a remake of the Oscar-winning Hollywood feature Forrest Gump (1994), will release on OTT six months after it is released theatrically.
Explaining the logic behind this, Khan recently said in a group interview, “Our theatrical films are coming on OTT [over-the-top, platforms] in a few weeks. In other words, I am telling the audience, ‘Mat dekho theatre mein, main aa raha hoon tumhare ghar mein. Kayko jaa rahe ho theatre mein?’ [Don’t watch the film in theatres, we are soon bringing it to your house. Why are you going in theatres?].”
Khan added that he has been following the six-month rule since before the pandemic hit. “How do you expect people to come to the theatres?” he asked. “It is illogical. I don’t understand why. I have always fought for six months. I understood this long back that if it’s coming on OTT [soon], who will visit theatres? I don’t know what the rest are doing.”
Directed by Advait Chandan, Laal Singh Chaddha also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya. The film is due to be released in theatres on 11 August.
