Box office: Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger struggles in a pan-India release

Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the film has performed averagely in its Hindi version so far.

Vijay Deverakonda in Liger

The Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday-starrer Liger (2022) is one of the most badly received films this year as it has been panned by both audiences and critics alike. But the movie’s Hindi version hasn’t faced much slack on its opening day.

Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the film opened at an average number of Rs4.50 crore nett yesterday, 26 August, in Hindi, as per figures shared by the trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com. Liger had made an additional Rs1.25 crore nett from the paid previews on Thursday evening, taking its Hindi total to almost Rs6 crore so far.

But Liger hasn’t fared well in Telugu, which is its main market. The film did open well at Rs17 crore nett on Thursday, as per figures shared by BollywoodHungama.com. However, it had a huge fall yesterday as it could manage only Rs4.40 crore nett.

Liger review: This Vijay Deverakonda-starrer makes no sense

The grand total of Liger across India remains around Rs27 crore nett. As per our trade sources, the film, which is produced by Puri Jagannadh and Karan Johar’s Dharma Production, is made at a high cost of around Rs120 crore. Hence, Liger has its job cut out to reach near that number.

The film has two holidays – today and tomorrow – at its disposal and the Ganesh Chaturthi festival falls on Wednesday, 31 August, as well. But there is a chance of the numbers could be affected by the film's negative response.
