Fawad Khan’s action drama, the Pakistani Punjabi-language film, The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022) is finally ready for release. Although the film was announced a while ago, and a trailer was also released, the release was stalled and it will reach audiences this year.
Starring Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, and Humaima Malick, Maula Jatt is helmed by Bilal Lashari, who has directed, edited, written and shot the film. The dialogues are by Nasir Adeeb. The film is a remake of the hit film Maula Jatt (1979), which is said to have spurred the trend of action films in Pakistani cinema at the time.
Beginning with a sweeping, stunning image of a village, we see a mother sitting along with her son. This is followed by a long line of dead bodies being brought in a funeral procession. The mother’s voice seems to be addressing her son where she says that she had no idea that her son will be the harbinger of death upon the village.
We see a menacing-looking Fawad, who seeks revenge against his arch rival, the ferocious Noori Natt. We see Maula Jatt take to the fighter’s ring and unleash himself upon his enemies. Alongside the action drama, there is a romantic track between Mukkho (Mahira) and Maula Jatt.
With breathtaking visuals and production design, each aspect of the film seems to have been painstakingly created. The rusticity adds to the epic scale of the film. Said to be the most expensive Pakistani film ever made, the trailer is both majestic and impressive.
The Legend of Maula Jatt is due to be released theatrically on 13 October.
