Akshay Indikar directed two Marathi feature films with Trijya (2022) and Sthalpuran and received accolades and awards for both. Sthalpuran, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2020, also helped him build up an association with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

It all occurred when Kashyap heard about the festival film from various people. “He found it very fascinating and challenging that we carry out the shoot only with a crew of seven or eight people and deploy only two or three people for post-production,” Indikar shared over a Zoom conversation with Cinestaan.com.

Later on, when Kashyap was in Pune, Maharashtra to shoot his upcoming Taapsee Pannu-starrer Dobaaraa (2022), he contacted Indikar and expressed his desire to see the film. “It was a big thing for me to show my film to someone who has been your idol and who has made it here after starting from scratch,” Indikar said. “He then visited my place and we became good friends.”

Their friendship also made Indikar an integral part of Kashyap’s next project as director. “I am working as a sound designer for his new film,” he said. The filmmaker doesn’t wish to name the film as it hasn’t been officially announced yet.

When asked about working with Kashyap, he said, “It was a great experience. He gave me the freedom to create a new experience for the film through the sound. It was a good learning experience for me. I got to see his detailing, sincerity and dedication from close quarters. I saw him create characters through dialogues. For me, it was like attending a film school.”

Indikar’s Trijya, which stars Abhay Mahajan, was recently released on MUBI India.
