It has been over a decade since Lucky Ali’s last album Raasta Man, which was released in 2011. The singer has returned with the first of many singles, ‘Intezaar’, with composer-producer Mikey McCleary.
The latest video single, which began streaming globally on 6 April, is the first of many slated to be released this year by the two collaborators.
Lucky Ali, who is the son of the late actor-filmmaker Mehmood, made his singing debut with Sunoh in 1996. He also acted in the features Sur: The Melody Of Life (2002), Kaante (2002) and Kasak (2005), and recorded for the films Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Anjaana Anjaani (2010) and Tamasha (2015).
About the new single, Lucky Ali said, “These songs are my way of coming to terms with life’s limitations and shortcomings. In a way, making these songs is a healing process for me. That said, I want the listeners to make their own interpretations of the songs, I want them to make these lyrics and songs their own too.”
While most of the new music was created in the studio, some parts were recorded remotely as Lucky Ali was in India and McCleary was in New York. “Mikey gets the vibes, feelings and emotions,” the singer revealed. “Be it in the studio while recording with me, doing the vocals, where he knows how to treat my voice, he gets how I should do a certain part... or in the music production bit where he adds his magic to make the song much more... especially when I have run out of contributions to it. We have composed most of these songs together while jamming on chord progressions and trying out different melodies. The first one, 'Intezaar', is about relationships.”
McCleary, who is also Lucky Ali’s brother-in-law, had worked with him on his first album Sunoh in London, England. McCleary said, “Lucky has magic in his voice, and he is also a terrific song creator to work with. Making these songs was a collaborative process. There are more modern production elements to the music now which keeps it accessible to a younger contemporary audience, but the songs are still primarily based around the acoustic guitar and the instrumentation is pretty organic sounding overall.”
Released by Farm House Music and Bay Music House, the album Intezaar is distributed by Believe Digital. Watch the music video for 'Intezaar' below.
