Veteran actor Salim Ghouse dies at 70 in Mumbai

The versatile artiste worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and English-language films.

Veteran stage, television and film actor Salim Ghouse died of a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on Thursday morning. He was 70. Ghouse had been rushed to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Versova late on Wednesday.

The versatile actor, who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and English language movies.

He began his acting career in 1978 in Swarg Narak and later featured in several critically and commercially acclaimed Hindi films such as Chakra (1981), Saaransh (1984) and Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho (1984), Trikal (1985), Koyla (1997), Maharaja (1998), Soldier (1998) and Indian (2001). 

He was also known for his roles in television shows such as Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj (1988) and X Zone (1998).

Kamal Hassan's Vetri Vizha (1989, Tamil), Mohanlal's Thazhvaram (1990, Malayalam), Chinna Gounder (1992, Tamil), Mani Ratnam's Thiruda Thiruda (1993, Tamil) are some of his notable South films while his memorable English movies include The Perfect Murder (1988) and The Deceivers (1988).

Several of the actor's colleagues paid their respects on social media. One of his Tamil co-stars, Vijayakanth, offered his condolences on Facebook. 

Ghouse's Thazhvaram co-star Mohanlal also posted a eulogy on Facebook. 

 Actor, dancer and comedian Jaaved Jaaferi also tweeted a heartfelt message.
