Lagan trailer: Intense romantic drama depicts struggles of young couple

Directed by Arjun Gujar, the film stars newcomer Sujit Choure and Shweta Kale

The trailer of Arjun Gujar's maiden directorial venture Lagan sets the stage for an intense romantic drama that explores the struggles of a young couple who want nothing but to live in peace. But their parents and relatives are dead set against their union because of the stark difference between the social and financial status of the two families.

Ajya (Sujit Choure) belongs to a low-caste community while Rajnandini (Shweta Kale) comes from an upper-crust clan that has political ties. The story begins in their childhood when Ajya falls in love at first sight with Rajnandini, only to get rejected by her.

But once they become older, Rajnandini develops feelings for Ajya. When things finally start to look good for the couple, Rajnandini's influential family finds out about their affair and they arrange for her to be married to some other guy.

The trailer also shows glimpses of atrocities committed against Ajya's family because he dared to court a young woman from an upper-caste and rich family.

The film also seems to explore the theme of caste discrimination. Many Marathi movies have tackled this subject in the past few years, so it will be interesting to see if the writer-director has come up with something new. Both newcomers look confident.

The film also stars  Smita Tambe, Anil Nagarkar, Apeksha Chalwade, Ramchandra Dhumal, Ranjit Ranadive, Nilesh Londhe and Sanket Jagdale.

Produced by Gujar Brothers Entertainment and distributed by Sunshine Studios, Lagan is scheduled to be released on 6 May.
